Human Rights Report
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 27 July asked Awami Swechasebak League leaders and activists to help people in getting vaccines in rural areas and motivate them to go for Covid-19 test so they can receive proper treatment.

Kamala releases strategy to tackle root causes of migration

Human Rights Report:
US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Thursday that efforts to address root causes of migration from three Central American countries won't produce immediate results as she unveiled a broad strategy that avoids detailed targets and deadlines, reports AP.
Harris said the United States alone cannot tackle deep-seated motives for people to leave Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, including corruption, violence and poverty. The governments of Mexico, Japan and South Korea, along with the United Nations, have committed to joining the push, she said without elaborating.
A one-page letter from the vice president and a fact sheet adhere to previous statements supporting short-term relief for migration pressures like extreme weather while committing sustained attention to long-term motivations for people to leave their countries.
"We will build on what works, and we will pivot away from what does not work," she wrote. "It will not be easy, and progress will not be instantaneous, but we are committed to getting it right."
Harris noted that she recently traveled to Guatemala, "where one of the largest challenges is corruption." On Tuesday, the Biden administration said it suspended cooperation with Guatemala's Attorney General's Office after the firing of the agency's top anti-corruption prosecutor, saying it "lost confidence" in the country's willingness to fight corruption.

IMF chief cheers lending expansion ahead of G20 meeting

Human Rights Report:
Kristalina Georgieva said Friday the Fund's executive board has backed increasing its special drawing rights (SDR) by $650 billion as it looks to support countries recover from the Covid-19 crisis.
The increase would be the biggest ever for SDRs, which are international reserve assets that aid governments in protecting their financial reserves against global currency fluctuations, and also help the IMF calculate loans and interest rates.
"The IMF Executive Board yesterday concurred in my proposal for a new general SDR allocation equivalent to US$650 billion - the largest allocation in the IMF's history - to address the long-term global needs for reserves during the worst crisis since the Great Depression," Georgieva said in a statement.
"This is a shot in the arm for the world. The SDR allocation will boost the liquidity and reserves of all our member countries, build confidence and foster the resilience and stability of the global economy."

Human Rights Report:
Malaysia's embattled leader was accused of treason and urged to quit Thursday after the king denounced his crisis-hit government for misleading parliament, a rare public rebuke from the revered monarch, reports AFP.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin leads a scandal-plagued coalition that seized power last year without an election, but his government is on the verge of collapse after allies withdrew support.Parliament convened this week after a months-long suspension under a coronavirus state of emergency, which critics said was a bid by Muhyiddin to cling on to power. On Monday, the law minister told the legislature the emergency would end on August 1 and that several regulations enacted under it were being cancelled.

Emergency shelters save lives of Bangladeshi

peacekeepers in Mali

Human Rights Report:
This is an emergency shelter or bunker surrounded by sandbags about four feet in diameter in Gao camp. Every one of the camps rushes to the shelter when the camp siren sounds after automatic detection of the presence of terrorists. -Ahamed Ullah
As the United Nations (UN) mission in Mali is considered 'the most dangerous peacekeeping mission in the world', emergency shelters or bunkers save lives of the peacekeepers during any terrorist attack.
The shelters, surrounded by sandbags about four feet in diameter, protect the peacekeepers from any indirect fire (IDF) and mortar shell attacks in the West African country of Mali where the UN troops have the highest mortality rate.
In addition to the unfavourable weather, the peacekeepers deployed in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) are becoming the main target of the terrorists, according to mission top officials in Mali.
In Mali, all peacekeepers have to pay maximum attention to their own security while performing their duties. That is why it is very difficult for the peacekeepers to carry out the assigned task.
Members of the Bangladesh Battalion-7 (BANBAT-7) are carrying out their duties amid high risk in Gao, 1,200 kilometres away from Bamako, the capital city of Mali. In Gao, peacekeepers from different countries live in separate camps in the same enclosed area. Together these are called super camp. But the camps are not that peaceful as there is always the fear of attack.
This super camp is also attacked by armed terrorists. In order to crack the strong confidence of peacekeepers, they (terrorists) suddenly attack. However, the peacekeepers are adopting various strategies to prevent terrorist attacks as well as self-defence. Shelters or bunkers have been set up at various places in the camp. The emergency shelter is made of sandbags about four feet in diameter.
The camp siren sounds as soon as the presence of terrorists is automatically detected. Then every one of the camps rushes to the shelter or bunker wherever they are. Those who have the responsibility to prevent them build effective resistance against terrorists.
Senior Colonel Zhu Jinsong, sector east commander in Mali, said, "The security situation in Mali, specifically in our area of responsibility, is really challenging, unstable and unpredictable."
